I finally decided to go with Control4 for automation control for my dedicated HT. I got a very reasonable quote from the only dealer/installer in the state for installation and initial programming. I was ready to write him a check when I found out that I would never have access to the programming software. I felt really uncomfortable paying that kind of money for a system that was essentially closed to me. AFAIK, without the programming software, I'm dependent on that installer for any little change I might want to make in the future. Now I understand that with Control4's current business model they are dependent on their network of local dealers and I have no problem buying my hardware from them and paying for initial installation and programming. But if afterwards I decide I want to change which remote switch controls which light or add a motion sensor, I wanna be able to play with that on my own. Without access to programming, I can't do that, right? How do you guys feel about this? Is there anyway around it? I might be willing to take Control4's installer class if I could get the software from them? If I'm out of luck with Control4 are there any other option out there other then HAI that I can have full control of? TIA, Mario

Since no one is answering your question you may want to post it on one of the C4 threads . I'm not sure what they are obligated to give you as far as programming software, but you CAN obtain it by other means . ;) PM me if you want to know more . https://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=541813

The software is available to the consumer. It is a seperate sku. You would just have to make a deal with your installer.

yeah, it isn't that difficult to get your hands on the 'pro' version on the software. I have also heard that C4 is going to offer a 'consumer' version of the software in the future to address concerns such as yours.

From what you guys are saying, it sounds like the programming software is available out in the wild and my dealer just didn't want to work with me. I did get a sense that I was a small fish for my dealer and he would rather focus on $10K+ installations. Thanks for your help, Mario

Yes, the Composer software is for the dealer/installer. However, some dealers are willing to give their customer the software for programming, tweaking, etc. Max

Does Control4 have a policy on this or is it up to each dealer to decide?

As I understand it (I'm not a dealer -- I'm an end user) dealers have some amount of flexibility.

While I can not speak for your dealer. I have always been willing to give the client a copy of his program and software. With the understanding that 'ANY CHANGE HE MAKES IS AT HIS RISK' and that he will be charged not a small amout if I have to come out and solve any software related problems (or hardware changes) that he has. Having said some Dealers spend a lot of time creating custom graphics and/or control programming and they do not want someone copying their work without payment (think artist rights). Most dealers have had the client that changes something which creates a problem, then calls and tries to convince us that he has had the problem all along and it most be the installer/dealers fault. These people are the ones that make it tough on the rest. Good Luck.
